Speech Pathologist On Site
The employment of a Speech Pathologist to assess students with a possible language disorder, to provide strategies for teachers when working with students and to work in classrooms to support learning, has improved learning outcomes and engagement for students.
There is significant research that shows a high percentage of juvenile offenders in fact have an undiagnosed language disorder. Understanding this disorder and the impact it has on young people’s responses enables us to help the student respond differently – particularly in situations where they feel anxious or angry. This has been the key work of our Speech Pathologist, Christine D'Arcy.
Several of our students have been diagnosed with a language disorder and the work of Christine in assessing, working with families, teachers and Senior Constable Matt Round has supported strategies to be applied to maximise learning outcomes for students, support positive behaviour choices and ultimately increase engagement.
