We have nearly completed our first week here in Japan.
Our last day in Osaka consisted of a visit to Namba Shrine, Osaka Castle, Kuromon Markets & Shinsaibashi-suji shopping street. Which is about 3 blocks long. In the evening we watched a Sumo show which was a bit of a history lesson, demonstration and audience participation. Tex was lucky enough to get up on stage and go head-to-head with one of the sumo’s. He embraced the experience and it was a great laugh for us all.
We arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday and headed straight to our accommodation for a quick bag drop before making our way to Tokyo Tower. We were lucky enough to have some fantastic views, which was the perfect way to start our time in the city.
We arrived back at around 8pm, ready for a much-needed rest before an early start on Thursday.
Thursday it was Sensoji Temple, Tokyo Skytree, Takeshita Street & Shibuya Crossing. Again, we had great views from the Skytree, the only thing we couldn’t see on the day was Mt Fuji. At Takeshita Street several students hit the pet/cat/pig (that’s me) café and really enjoyed interacting with the animals. Then it was on to Shibuya for a shop until you drop experience. I think everyone came back with some kind of shopping bag filled with their purchases. A full on day with well over 25thousand steps and arriving back at 10pm.
The consensus from the group today was to have a later start, so we’re heading to Disneyland at around 11am. It’s going to be a long day, with a late finish and an expected return around 11pm.

The event isn’t just for seniors – community members of all ages are welcome. It’s during the first week of school holidays, so would make a perfect activity for kids, grandkids and any other family members.

We arrived safely in Japan and have pretty much hit the ground running.
Day 1 began with a 1.5-hour journey by train and bus to the Buddhist temple, Katsuo-ji Temple — the Temple of Luck.
The grounds are filled with thousands of small Daruma dolls, placed by visitors as they pray for success and the achievement of personal goals.
The students loved exploring the temple grounds, discovering the many Daruma dolls along the way and collecting stamps to complete their very own printed Daruma on a postcard.
We arrived back at our accommodation around 3:30pm for a well-earned rest, as everyone was feeling tired after the flight and an early start. By 5:30pm, we were ready to head out again and made our way to the famous Dotonbori District.
Stretching along the Dotonbori Canal, the area is renowned for its vibrant entertainment, restaurants and nightlife. With hundreds of thousands of visitors passing through each night, the streets were buzzing with energy.
We stopped for dinner before enjoying a boat ride along the canal. As we cruised through Dotonbori, we took in the dazzling lights, bustling restaurants and packed bridges. People waving as we passed beneath the bridges, adding to the lively atmosphere and making it a wonderful first evening in Osaka.
Day 2 began with a 45-minute express train ride to Nara, where we visited Nara Park and met the famous bowing deer. It was certainly a challenge trying not to get butted, bitten or have our clothes nibbled on! I can tell you, not everyone left Nara Park unscathed.
In the afternoon, we toured Tōdai-ji Temple, followed by Kasuga Taisha Shrine. We spent around 2.5 hours walking around the two sites, taking in the beautiful temples, shrines and surrounding scenery.
We then made our way up to the Wakakusa summit. I must say, the deer up there were much better behaved!
Our guide was amazing and had an incredible amount of general knowledge about the temples, shrines and, of course, the deer. The students were well engaged throughout the tour and really enjoyed learning about the history and culture of the area.
We arrived back at our accommodation around 6:00pm, tired but happy after a full day exploring Nara. It was time for dinner and then an early night, ready to recharge before doing it all again on Day 3!
